Thomas Moran's 1859 painting Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came is a poetic and extravagant canvas from the remarkable American landscape painter. Closely associated with the Hudson River School, Moran found his ideal subject in the dramatic Rocky Mountains, finding a sweeping narrative in the ragged vistas of the American frontiers. Alongside Albert Bierstadt, Moran became closely associated with the emerging borders of the United States, making frequent journeys to the Western edges to paint his monumental landscapes. Beginning as an apprentice to a wood-engraver, Moran honed his talent for depth, scale, and turbulently hyper-real situations. At the time of painting Moran was working as an illustrator and colorist for a popular monthly magazine. Combining his populist abilities with his literary aspirations, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came is clearly influenced by the British landscape painter J. M. W. Turner which Moran would certainly have seen when he traveled to England in 1862. The sublime use of dark hues rising into lighter tones suggests a redemptive journey made towards the central bastion of the painting.
Taking its title and subject from a poem by the English writer Robert Browning, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came is itself a line taken from William Shakespeare's play King Lear. Written in 1855, explores Roland's journey to the Dark Tower and is suffused with nightmarish images, hyper-real topography, and remains an unusual addition to Browning's work. Moran captures the unsettling complexity with an elegant, bombastic eye, glimpsing the deeply psychological terrain of the poet's narrative. A stark and jarring canvas, Moran's reproduction of Browning's work remains a unique example of the intermingling between English Romanticism and Western frontier painting that would come to characterise American painting in the late nineteenth century.
