Although Thomas Moran was most known for his work portraying the great American landscapes, such as the Grand Canyon or Shoshone Falls, a good portion of his production was less specific, or even not related to America at all. Many of those works were produced in the early years of the 1890’s, when the artist traveled back to Europe, taking the opportunity to further his studies of the work of the great landscape masters, chief among the British J. W. M. Turner, the painter of light.
In fact, in few other paintings is the influence of Turner so visible as in this nocturnal maritime scene. The echoes of the painter of light go beyond the choice of subject matter and can be felt especially in the composition and use of light. Like many of Turner’s paintings, this piece follows a rather traditional landscape composition, with a well-defined horizon placed just below the vertical center of the canvas.
As to the use of light, Moran makes a delicate use of the moonbeams to define the breaking of the waves. Since these are relatively calm waters he portrays, such schemes are vital to instill some dynamism and even a measure of emotion in the placid waters. Admirers of Turner will also note that Moran employs a very similar hue for the water, departing from the usual lighter hues of azure he usually employs in his paintings of the great American Landscapes. Likewise, his brush strokes here are distinctive, bearing more movement and less definition than what would usually be expected from an artist from the Hudson River School.
Sold by Christie’s in 1996 to private collectors, it is difficult to pinpoint the location that inspired the relatively small oil on canvas. But, considering Moran’s production around the year 1891, when it was painted, it is likely that he was depicting either the Adriatic coast, seen during his tour of Europe or the Long Island coast upon his return. Regardless, his choice of color palette denotes a chilly evening, neither a hot summer night nor a cold overcast winter one.
Years later, in 1902, he would produce a second painting with the same name, but instead of painting a calm beach evening, he instead portrayed a chaotic stormy sea, and in a style even more similar to Turner’s, especially at the end of the latter’s career.
