Few are the works that enable us to look at two very different moments of an artist’s career and thus gain a deeper understanding of the development not only in technique but also in perspectives and media. In the year 1869, Thomas Moran produced some lithograph prints entitled Solitude, in which he portrayed two trees, one larger and one smaller, by a stony creek, which divides the composition vertically. Copies of that lithograph are today in museums such as the Gilcrease Museum, in Tulsa, and the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston.
Many years later, in 1897, Thomas Moran would seem to return to the now decades old print and produce an oil on canvas version of the same view. Although mirrored, the similarity between the compositions is indisputable, with similar trees by a similar creek that divides the composition vertically, flowing from behind the trees towards the observer.
More interesting than the features in common between both works are the aspects where they differentiate themselves from one another, due either to the different restrictions imposed by different media or to development in artist’s sense of aesthetic. As such, the comparison interests both those engrossed by studying art and media in general, as well as those attracted to studying Thomas Moran’s work in specific.
Comparisons aside, the oil on canvas, which is now in possession of private collectors, follows Moran’s usual penchant for the idyllic landscape but breaks with his custom of identifying the locale of the composition. This would be quite unusual for Moran at the point of his career when the painting was produced since much of his work was dedicated specifically to making the Yellowstone and Yosemite names known and recognizable throughout America.
The strangeness dissipates, however, if we consider that Moran was taking a new look at an old piece, especially considering that the piece in question was produced before the artist started to travel the American countryside in the service of Scribner’s Monthly. If we bear that in mind, it enables us to appreciate how Moran was capable of transforming one medium into another, all the while maintaining not only the composition, but the overall look and feel of the original, by being not restricted, but inspired, by the difference in restrictions imposed by each medium.

The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
