That Thomas Moran’s work figures among that of the greatest American artists of all time is quite an arguable stance, but the clout possessed by this particular piece renders such discussion moot. It is one of three pieces of art by Thomas Moran in possession of the White House Collection, and it could often be seen occupying a wall of the Oval Office during the Barack Obama administration when the Head of the state received foreign dignitaries in the famed room, alongside a portrait of George Washington above the mantelpiece.
The star of this oil on canvas, painted in 1895, is the Teton Range, a mountain range in the Rocky Mountains, from its side visible to the state of Wyoming. The stony formation was named by early French voyageurs, fluvial fur transporters, due to what they thought was a great likeness to human nipples. The area around the mountain range was established as the Grand Teton National Park in 1929.
Faithful to his Hudson River School style, Moran depicts the landscape with its characteristic grandeur, making extensive use of light to magnify the epicness of an already awe-inspiring setting. The composition follows Moran’s usual choices, with the lower part of the painting being vertically divided by a river that flows towards the observer and horizontally divided from the upper part by the immediate field of vision obstacle imposed by, in this case, the treeline, but it could also have been a rocky cliff or the edge of a lake.
Beyond the treeline is where the focus of the painting is, in the breathtaking sight of the Teton Range in all its might. To intensify the difference in the field of vision Moran employs a stark color contrast, which complements the perspective contrast. While the foreground of the scene is painted in dark blues and greens, creating not a somber, but a cold and crisp surrounding for the observer, in the background the mountains are covered in golden sunlight.
To an extent, the contrast between hot and cold beckons the observer to discover the wonders that lie in those mountains, leaving the cold, albeit beautiful, and safe surroundings of the nearby lake. In the sky the moon is visible, indicating that either the objective will have to wait until morning, or that it is still morning, and the observer has a full day of travel and adventure ahead of them.
