The portrait of Isabella of Portugal depicts one of the most powerful women from all time, with all her splendor. Painted with rich detail, the masterpiece was made after the Empress's death in 1548, using a classical scheme. The model is sitting next to an open window featuring a landscape to give more contrast to the composition. Isabella is portrayed wearing a red and gold adorned dress. Her necklace, made of pearls and precious gems fixed at her chest, are drawn in detail and perfection. She also wears a jewel-topped headdress, on top of a hair locked up in braids. On her left hand, the Empress holds an open prayer book, while the other is relaxed on her lap.
The famous Empress of the Carnation, Isabella of Portugal, was Emperor Charles V's wife and Queen. Regent of Spain for several years, her capacity to rule was determinant to secure the continual progress of her nation and independence from imperial policies.
After the death of his beloved wife, Emperor Charles tried to recover a portrait that Margaret of Austria had received from his deceased wife because he had none in his possession. When he received the painting, he was unhappy because he thought that it did not resemble his wife, urging him to commission a new portrait from Titian. The artist received a small portrait of Isabella, painted by William Scrots, and it served as a model for Tiziano to produce his portrayal of the Empress.
Charles decided to ask Titian to retouch Isabella's nose because the artist painted it as it was, and the Emperor wanted the nose as he dreamt it. The great master faced a similar request from the King before when he was asked to retouch his jaw to look more imponent.
In the portraits Titian made for Emperor Charles V, the sitter did not want a faithful reproduction of their appearance but instead wished idealized representation of what they were, in a more personal and moving nature. This painting was the Emperor's favorite, and he carried it with him everywhere he went. After Charles's death, Philip II sent this oil canvas to the Descalzas Reales Convent, where it remained until 1636 when it was moved to the Alcazar. Now, this astonishing masterpiece is housed at the Museo del Prado.
