One of the most versatile and talented painters from the Renaissance, Tiziano Vecelli, was born in 1488. Known for his peculiar style, the great master was adept at the usage of the chiaroscuro technique, bringing great contrast to the main characters on his canvas, enhancing the sense of perspective and bringing into the spotlight colorful and impactful paintings, a technique that deeply influenced Modern western painters.
Responsible for multiple masterpieces featuring religious and mythological scenes like Bacchus and Ariadne and his astonishing The Venus of Urbino, Titian is one of the rare artists that was regarded at the same level as the legends Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo Da Vinci.
Painted at Titian's mature phase, this formidable fresco was finished in 1524, commissioned by the Holy Church. Originally painted to celebrate the arrival of the French army, in the year of 1523, it became part of the Palazzo Ducale's collection. The masterpiece is currently housed at Saint Mark's Square in Venice, Italy. Titian used one of the Venetian boatmen as a model for Saint Christopher, trait explicit in the character pose, almost like a gondolier plying his oar. The image of baby Jesus was also inspired by a commoner child with robust and cheerful traits.
The painter made this fresco with gentle brush strokes and used lighter pigments, mostly blue. He is featuring Saint Christopher carrying the infant Jesus Christ in his shoulders. With a very muscular body, especially on his strong legs, the Saint of the travelers is one of the most precise examples of the artist's skill and knowledge of anatomy.
St Christopher was also depicted with a beard and fine facial traits, different from the severe man that the Bible describes. The man wears a blue and white tunic, with red silk crossing his body and attached to his waist. On his back, a green cape was painted flying high, denouncing the wind and the severity of his journey while he serves Christ, without losing his faith.
On the Saint's shoulders, Titian depicted an infant and rotund Christ pointing to the heavens with his tiny hand, almost in a cherub style. He wears a white tunic and looks down at the giant that carries him with kind eyes and sober expression. The couple is crossing a calm river, and in the background, it is noticeable the landscape of a city was a tall tower.
