One of the most talented and influential Classic artists of history, Tiziano Vecelli, was born in 1488 and became considered the sun amidst small stars, quoting the final line of Dante's Paradiso. Titian was a versatile artist known for painting with mastery landscape backgrounds, religious and mythological oil paintings, and portraits.
His style of painting influenced great painters of his time, like Raphael and Diego Velázquez, and became a guideline for Modern western artists, like Edouard Manet. Perfectionist and self-critical, Titian had the habit of keeping some paintings for years in his studio, reworking and constantly improving expressions and details of his works of art.
One of the most famous nude paintings of art history is The Venus of Urbino, completed in 1534. In this masterpiece, Titian portrayed the goddess of love and beauty, Venus, in a sensual pose, reclining on a red couch covered by white silk. Featuring the surroundings that resemble a Renaissance palace, Tiziano painted two maids jumbling through a marriage chest.
Several interpretations were made by scholars of these paintings, but all agree that the artwork has a strong erotic charge. It was said at the time that the woman depicted in the work of art was made to celebrate the Guidobaldo marriage. This symbolism is reinforced by the image of the cassone chest. There is also a dog on the bed, very similar to the dog in the portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga, Guidobaldo's mother.
Venus was portrayed holding a bouquet of red flowers in her right hand while her other hand covers her private parts. She uses a bracelet and earrings made of gold and precious stones, in harmony with her blonde hair and the color blend used on the dog. The artist represented the palace with rich details. The floor was painted with a beautiful marble texture with a brown color palette. On the wall, Titian added tapestry featuring golden and black colors, drawn with care and giving a feeling of warmth for the scene.
The oil painting remained in possession of the Duke Guidobaldo's court until 1624, when the Della Rovere family moved to Pesaro, displaying the canvas in the Villa Imperiale. In 1633, The Venus of Urbino was added to the Medici family's collection after the marriage of Vittoria Della Rovere with Ferdinando II, Grand Duke of Tuscany. In the year 1736, this astonishing masterpiece moved to Uffizi Gallery, where it remained.
