FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Digger is a 62.2 x 46.8 cm (24.4 x 18.4 in) charcoal drawing done by Vincent Van Gogh in 1881. The work belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Many of Van Gogh’s drawings from this period were preserved by his own family: his brother Theo had a large portion of his artistic output, and his sister-in-law, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, took great care of it until she died in 1925. The paper’s yellow appearance is due to its aging process. The painter drew mainly with charcoal, but the white details were done with chalk and the colored areas with watercolor.
The drawing was made from real-life observation; Van Gogh always worked from life and models. A man is shown digging. There are green details on the ground, done with chalk, to show the grass color. The man is looking down to the hole, which was done between his two legs. The shirt that he is using below his black vest is colored blue. The artist used the same color for some details on his shoes and the rocks around his feet.
Van Gogh used some lines in his body to make both the shadow and give the idea of folding fabric. Behind the man, some big bushes were rendered with dark tones through charcoal. A house’s ceiling can be seen in the top of the bushes and trees. They have long branches and muted orange leaves. The Dutch painter either used chalk or almost non-diluted white watercolor to make the clouds since their surface is very flat and the paper can’t be seen through it. He probably added the clouds to make his composition more dynamic and full of details, as his drawings used to be, creating unity through their difference and chaos.
During his previous years working as a missioner in Belgium, Van Gogh created the habit of drawing working people. After facing financial trouble and being dismissed from his job in 1881, Van Gogh was once again living with his parents in Etten. There he kept his drawing practice but now working with the rural working-class people. Some of these images were later inspired by Jean-François Millet, one of the artist’s strongest influences.
