In 1885, Vincent Van Gogh was living in Nuenen when he painted Autumn Landscape at Dusk. At the beginning of his career, his work is reminiscent of early Dutch artists, with dark colors pallets and more realistic representation. There is also a significant influence from the Realists, including Jean-François Millet.
The theme of loneliness is reoccurring thought Van Gogh’s career and can be seen in Autumn Landscape at Dusk. A single dark figure, with its back to the figure, walks towards the horizon. Even though the artist still didn’t let go of the shades of gray and black during this period, his love for color already show. This warm autumn atmosphere is created mainly by his use of color. The ground holds shades of warm brown and dark green. The leaves on the left side of the canvas are green and orange, while the trees on the right are orange, red and brown. The sky is dark with mixed green and blue, and the horizon is marked by the setting sun in strips of yellow and orange.
The composition is traditional for landscape paintings, leading the viewer's eyes into the horizon. The figure is in the forefront, walking in a road with three trees side by side on the left. He seems to be heading to the horizon, but a small tree is in his path. The middle of the canvas is marked by a line of trees, and the vegetation gets thicker to the right. There is a minimal area of sky showing, as the trees are tall and filled with leaves.
During this period, he paints another work with a similar theme but in a much lighter tone entitled Autumn Landscape. Van Gogh was having difficulties in his hometown, for a false rumor was going around that he impregnated a peasant girl. He was ostracized from the local community and clergy, because of this he had difficulty getting models to portray, so he concentrated his work on landscapes and still life paintings. The artist gradually gave up on the dark color pallets as well as the realistic representations, especially after he moved to Paris a year after. He decided to leave his Dutch homeland and live amongst the Impressionists and Pointillists in the capital of modern art at the time.
