Lonely, penniless, and having taken up painting only a few years previously, the young Van Gogh moved to the rural town of Nuenen in his native Netherlands and proceeded to paint detailed studies of the countryside and the peasant populace. First exploring the intricate weaving of bird's nests, Van Gogh moved onto human subjects which would lead to his first major work, 1885's The Potato Eaters.
Painted in the previous year, the artist's Autumn Landscape with Four Trees is an elegant and moody leap into the declining autumn landscape that had produced so many vivid subjects the previous spring. Boosted perhaps by the first exhibition of his work in a shop window in The Hague, Van Gogh's confidence was exemplified in his broad, smooth brushwork, and his subtle and studied reproduction of light and shade.
Not yet showing any hint of the vivid contrasts of colors that would characterize his late work, Autumn Landscape with Four Trees is an exercise in reserve, reproduction, and refinement. Like Autumn Landscape his palette consists of dark pastels, natural tones, earthly realism, and various interplays with shades of brown. The skeletal form of the bare tree to the right of the others does, however, show a hint of the course and stark outlines that would form the basis of the vivid juxtaposition of the color of his later work.
Van Gogh enjoyed the rugged trees that grew naturally, without much trimming. The three trees in the forefront translate this – the one on the right seems to have been recently trimmed and is sprouting eerie looking thin branches, with little amounts of leaves. The other tree tops are filled with brown and orange leaves, growing in a unregular way. The skies are gray and cloudy, making this painting a bit more somber. A person in all black was portrayed in the far background.
His time in Nuenen gave life to a prodigious number of paintings and drawings, amounting to over 200 before he moved to Antwerp and descended into a punishing regime of bohemian city-living. The surprising, elongated, hunched, and drifting quality of his subjects in Autumn Landscape with Four Trees suggest an artist beginning to experiment with the nature of experiencing reality before his studies of the great master Reuben, and the Japanese woodcut prints that so inspired the Impressionists, became imprinted in his style.
