In 1888, the Post-Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh moved to the city of Arles. He founded an art studio called Studio of the South with the hopes of joining other modern artists, notably Paul Gauguin. This was an inspired time for the painter, as he joined elements of Impressionism and Pointillism to create his unique aesthetic language. He founded the studio in the Yellow House, a location he found to be perfect for receiving fellow painters.
During this period, he paints a series of boats of the Rhône river, located not far behind the Yellow House. He begins this series by producing sketches like Quay with Men Unloading Sand Barges 2, which he sends to his brother Theo by post, and finished it in the oil painting Sand Barges. These works are deeply inspired by Eugene Delacroix and his work Christ on the Lake of Gennesaret. Although Van Gogh wished to produce images looking down at the boats, he also wanted to portray the Rhône river and its beautiful sunset, so he concludes two paintings: Coal Barges and Coal Barges II.
The work Coal Barges is painted with spectacular and vibrant colors. Van Gogh was no longer interested in depicting what he saw in his paintings, but what he felt, and using color was his way of doing so. He paints a gradient sky that begins with a slight touch of orange on the horizon and turns into bright yellow and finally green as the sky continues upwards. The clouds are painted in diagonal streaks of yellow and orange. The water reflects the faraway black and blues of the city on the horizon, as well as the yellow and green colors of the sky.
In the forefront, Van Gogh portrays a series of dark boats on shore with men working on them. Since the light is coming from the background, the artist captures the shade it creates on the figures. He highlights the French flag on one of the boats as its colors pop from the colors of the river. This modern artist is greatly inspired by Japanese woodcut prints and relates this work to Hokusai, because of his use of a bright color pallet portraying the wonders of nature. He also uses dark contours on the figures, as the woodcut prints do. His brush strokes are loose and carry thick layers of paint.
