In the year of 1889, Vincent Van Gogh admits himself into the mental asylum in Saint-Remy after suffering from mental and psychological crises, and spent a year at the institution. After a month living in Saint-Remy, he gains permission to go to the woods and paint. During this time, the artist developed a great fascination with the shapes and movement of the cypress tree, saying they remind him of the obelisks of the ancient Egyptians and paints Cypresses. He also painted Wheatfield with Cypress I, and Cypresses with Two Women, among other landscapes that include this tree.
He found this theme both appealing and challenging, for he saw it as the darkness in a sunny landscape. He also told his brother through a letter that he found it difficult to achieve this shade of green, comparing it to the color of a glass bottle. He captured these rich tonalities of green and black, contrasting with the light and breezy landscape. Van Gogh was able to portray the grandiosity of these trees in this specific painting using a vertical canvas. The trees are on the left side taking up most of the painting and exceed the top edge, beyond the viewer's imagination.
The Post-Impressionist painter includes a yellow crescent moon on the light blue and busy sky. The white and gray clouds swirl and mix with the blue shades, as they get darker when closer to the moon on the top right corner. He uses similar curvy and smooth brush strokes throughout the painting and mixes a part of the dark blue mountains in the background with the green and yellow vegetation in the front. Van Gogh is able to beautifully portray a windy and warm evening with a sense of movement as he perfectly combines the color pallet with the movement of his strokes.
During the next year, Vincent Van Gogh showed this work in the Salon des Indépendants, an annual exhibition that gave a platform for modern painters to show their artwork. The artists that participated in this Salon were against the rules and regulations imposed on the art world by the Classic Academies, this including the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. Cypresses is an excellent example of painting made en plein air, meaning it was painted outside, most likely in one session. Van Gogh would do this so he could portray the optical effects sunlight had on nature – as did many of his contemporaries.
