Edge Of A Wheatfield With Poppies

Vincent Van Gogh paints Edge Of A Wheatfield With Poppies in 1887. During this year he moves to Paris and drastically changes his painting style. The artist was influenced by the Impressionist painters, and after moving to the capital of France, he had a more direct contact with artists and their work, like Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet. There isn’t much information on the paintings he produced during this time, for most of what we know about Van Gogh’s work results from the letters he wrote to his friends and family – especially his brother Theo. Since he was living with Theo in Paris, they did not exchange letter – therefore, there is no way of knowing Van Gogh’s interpretation and thoughts on the work he was producing during this period.

This crucial period was marked by Van Gogh’s change in style, as he became more confident in representing his uniqueness in his work. Each painting shows how he able to achieve a step closer to his true essence as a painter. Edge Of A Wheatfield With Poppies is an example of one of these works, as he loosens his brush strokes and enriches his color pallet. The rural theme comes as an influence from the Realism movement and is recurrent in his work. He also paints Wheat Field with a Lark, with a lighter color pallet and more structured composition.

Van Gogh often used rectangular and horizontal canvases for painting landscapes, but not in this case. He chooses a vertical canvas, just as the ones usually selected for portraits, and divides the scene virtually in half. The top half of the painting portrays a blue sky that doesn’t vary too much in tonalities, except for the heavy and thick brush strokes of the white clouds. The top left corner shows a thin tree in brown and green. Next to it are a variety of different vegetation, painted in a fast manner.

The bottom half depicts the wheat field in a richer color pallet than the top of the canvas. Van Gogh uses mostly yellow, orange and ochre to paint the field, along with specks of red to portray the poppies, and he also mixed many areas of green vegetation as well. As a master of complementary color combinations, this painting is an excellent example of how Van Gogh begins gradually to apply this to his work.
