In 1887, Vincent Van Gogh's career changed as he moved to Paris, France. During this period, he embraces the Parisian life still and culture, having direct contact with artists and their work. He had seen paintings by Paul Signac and Georges Seurat a year before at the last exhibitions organized by the Impressionists and was profoundly influenced. After moving to Paris, he develops friendships with some of these artists, helping propel his work and technique.
The painting Fishing In Spring is a result of this Impressionist influence, especially the relationship he had with Signac, for they painted together and helped Van Gogh to introduce a more bold color pallet. They painted en plein air — meaning they worked outside to capture the natural light — by the banks of the Seine river. The Seine had become a mark for the modern Parisian painters, as they portrayed the vegetation, boats, fishermen, and bridges that surrounded the reflective water. Van Gogh executed a series of paintings and sketches of this theme as well, including Bridge Across The Seine at Asnieres and The Seine with a Rowing Boat.
This was a transformational year for Van Gogh's way of painting. In Fishing In Spring his brush strokes are looser than some of his earlier works, and his color pallet is beautifully complementary. In the foreground, he paints trees and other vegetation, as if the artist was hidden behind the nature to paint without being seen. The trees on the left of the canvas mark one of the darkest spots of the painting, as he uses shades of green, orange, brown, red and yellow. The green grass seems to blend into the vigorous strokes of blue, purple, black and white of the water.
In the river, there are two green boats, one empty and the other with a sitting man clutching his own hands. As the river gets farther from the viewer, the colors get lighter, and Van Gogh inserts areas of green, pink and yellow reflexes. There is a bridge in the far background painted with ochre, green, blue and purple, and the banks next to it are rich in light soaked vegetation. The unconventional composition, bright colors, and dark contours are a visible influence of the Japanese woodcut prints Van Gogh admired so much.
