The Post-Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh painted Landscape with Couple Walking and Crescent Moon in 1890. During this time, he was admitted to an asylum in Saint-Rémy. He went voluntarily, after having a break-down and cutting off his own ear. The modern painter continued having the desire to paint while in treatment and, soon after being admitted, was allowed to go explore the outskirts of the asylum.
Van Gogh took advantage of these outings to paint the landscapes filled with beautiful plants and horizons. The isolation of society hindered him and can be seen in this painting. This twilight scene seems hopeful of a better future. A couple in the forefront walk side-by-side, talking and in harmony. The man is in violet-blue clothing and has orange hair and beard – resembling the artist – while the woman wears a long yellow dress. Van Gogh combines the couple in complementary colors, as well as with their body language. They walk in between the olive groves, the olive groves being a recurring theme during this period, as in Olive Grove II.
A couple of tall cypress trees appear in the background. They are also a theme the artist portrayed many times while in Saint-Rémy, like in Cypresses which also had an image of a crescent moon. The hills in the far background are painted in rich tonalities of blues and black. The diagonal brush strokes used to paint the hills follow the same sense as the beginning of the sky. The twilight brings a rich orange-red streak on the horizon – complementing the overwhelming blue and green of the painting – and fading into the blue night sky.
The crescent moon is thin and yellow. Van Gogh uses the same color to create a halo that encircles the moon in small brush strokes. He also breaks the diagonal pattern of the sky with vertical lines of yellow brush strokes over the blue. The influence of Japanese art is very clear in this work, for Van Gogh used vibrant colors and contours the figures with thick and dark lines, as well as using an unusual composition depicting a scene of the everyday life. Many modern artists, like the Dutch painter, collected these oriental prints and were greatly inspired by them.
