Vincent Van Gogh admitted himself to an Asylum in Saint-Rémy, after having an awful break-down. His health was debilitated, and he sought for help, stating in letters to family — especially to his brother Theo — that he had trouble eating and felt weak. The artist stayed in Saint-Rémy for about a year and during this period, he never desired to stop working, drawing and painting still life themes indoors, as well as making reproductions of works from his favorite artists.
After he regained enough of his health, he gained permission to roam the outskirts of the asylum to paint. The work entitled Large Plane Trees was done en plein air — meaning it was painted outside like many Impressionists and Post-Impressionists strived to work. It represents the grand trees of Road Menders in Saint-Rémy and the people walking along it.
Van Gogh completed two almost identical works, being that he entitled the second one The Road Menders. These works were exhibited side by side in 1948 in an art show in Cleveland, and after using x-ray technology to scan the works, it was discovered that Large Plane Trees was, in fact, the first of the two paintings. The artist paints this artwork on a not primed cotton fabric — meaning it wasn't prepared to paint — so the result is rougher than in the second painting that was executed on a primed canvas.
Another difference from the two is that the first painting was done outside, as it shows his mistakes and repairs — while the second one is a copy done in a studio. Although both paintings contain practically the same structure when it comes to the composition and drawings, the colors vary as the second painting is lighter and has a predominant yellow.
The color palette chosen for Large Plane Trees is very warm and overwhelming. The grand trees take up most of the landscape and overshadow the human figures of the painting, making them look small and insignificant to the nature surrounding them. The trees are painted with shades of brown, yellow, blue, black, white and even some areas of green. The orange-red leaves can be seen in the far background and complement the hints of blue and green throughout the painting. The areas of white underneath the trees serve as a resting area to the viewer's eyes.

If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
