Vincent Van Gogh moved to Arles in 1888 during the end of winter, and after some weeks he was able to experience the blossoming trees of spring — where he painted Orchard With Blossoming Apricot Trees. He was deeply inspired by flowers during his whole career, and in this period, he explored the possibilities of painting blossoming trees in landscapes of Arles. The Post-Impressionist artist completed a full series of studies and in under, a month finishes fourteen distinct paintings — including Peach Tree in Blossom, which he dedicated to his late teacher Anton Mauve, and gave it to his widow as a present.
Van Gogh portrayed flowers as a symbol of hope and rebirth, as he writes about this subject many times in letters to his friends and family, stating that painting them gave him great joy. The Japanese art of woodcut prints was one of Van Gogh's main inspirations for his paintings. These works would often portray nature in a stylized way, with pure colors and unusual compositions. The artist advised in letters to carefully observe the colorful Japanese prints, as they would bring him much joy and inspiration — especially when it came to flower arrangements.
Orchard With Blossoming Apricot Trees was painted en plein air, meaning he didn't work in his studio, only outside. This style was a characteristic of the Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist painters who thrived to achieve a representation of the visual effects light has on a scene. Van Gogh beautifully grasps this concept in this painting, as well as the others from this series. The simple composition of this landscape shows the beginning of spring, as only one tree is in bloom. The tree is almost centered on the canvas, and its trunk was painted with tonalities of brown, green and hints of blue. Although some pigments have faded, the light pink and orange still catch the viewers attention. He also brings specks of green and ochre in between the blue branches.
A green line divides the ground from the sky, and the treetops seem to merge with it. The grass is bright green, with specks of contrasting complementary red, as well as strokes of ochre over a brown colored base. There is one tree with dried branches in the forefront and many others in the background, highlighting, even more, a sense of rebirth as Vincent Van Gogh beautifully paints the blossoming pink tree.
