Pink peach trees (‘Souvenir de Mauve’) is a 73 × 60 cm (28.7 x 23.6 in) oil on canvas by the painter Vincent Van Gogh and is part of the Köller-Müller Museum collection, which has many works by the Dutch painter. Using his famous manner, Van Gogh painted exceedingly well one of his most appreciated subjects: the flora of his surroundings. With very bright colors and the use of impasto in many areas, the Modern master showed yet again his sensibility for the depiction of vegetation and light through his unmistakable brushwork and color use.
The peach tree occupies the composition’s center. On its many branches, pink flowers were painted in the visible brushstrokes that became the painter’s trademark. Almost like the sky, the ground is also very bright, dominated by a white that is akin to the blue sky and some other pink brushstrokes. At the edges of the field, a few lines and spots are green, indicating grass, and a light brown and blue fence delimitates the audience’s point of view.
The trees have a very graphic execution, outlined by black lines and very similar to Van Gogh’s drawings. The color harmony of the work evokes feelings of peace and tranquility, even though the thick use of paint gives the work also a rough and textural quality. The painter balances these traits well, resulting in beautiful artwork.
In 1888, Van Gogh had just arrived in Arles in February. In the prior months, he had lived in the French capital, where he met and even exhibited with some Post-Impressionist artists and got closely acquainted with the recent output of Modernism. According to his correspondences with his brother, Van Gogh saw this period his artistic peak. He states that images come naturally for him, and he has good sociability with the Arles residents, some of them sitting for his most famous portraits.
Enjoying that 1888 spring, Van Gogh painted almost every day, working on many different drawings and paintings of the same subject, as it was the case of the blossoming trees. The artist considered Pink peach trees (‘Souvenir de Mauve’) one of the most accomplished of these works. On that day, the artist received the news that his long-time friend, Anton Mauve, who had given him watercolors and taught him how to use them, had died. This picture is dedicated to him.
