When Vincent Van Gogh first arrives in Arles, France, he paints a series of fruitful trees. During this period, he receives a notice that his only teacher in painting, the also Dutch Anton Mauve had passed away. This news hit Van Gogh hard, and the artist made his new landscape painting Peach Trees in Blossom in homage to his old professor, giving it to Madame Mauve. In a letter to his brother Theo, the artist stated he wrote “Souvenir de Mauve” on the canvas and asked his opinion on sending this painting as a gift from both. He sends a watercolor version of the landscape to his brother, so he could see the color pallet and composition he had used.
The bright colors depicted in Peach Trees in Blossom create a comforting atmosphere. Van Gogh uses shades of blue, purple and ochre to portray the tree trunk, as well as the ground – that whitens as it gets farther from the viewer. Green brushstrokes appear in the left corner, suggesting grass growing from the snow. Two peach trees are almost in the middle of the picture, having beautiful blossoms of pink, magenta, and white. Behind the trees there is a wooden gate, creating an angle with the ground that changes the solidness of the centered composition.
The skilled painter was able to incorporate most colors of his pallet in the wood to represent the fence in the background, but what highlights the trees as the central figures are the contours. He uses dark purple and blue lines – that are almost black in some places – to make the trees stand out. The soothing light blue sky has many white clouds. He intentionally directs the brushstrokes on the ground going in towards the trees and the vertical strokes from the fence break a little of the organic feel of the blossoms, painted in blotches of thick paint.
This painting was completed at once and done en plain air, a tradition of painting outside shared between the Impressionists and Post-Impressionist artists. They found it important to fiscally see what was being portrayed and the natural light that was upon it. This way of modern painting results in works that require less time than the Classic and Academic did. Vincent Van Gogh worked beautifully with this technique for he had loose and expressive brush strokes that captivate viewers all around the world.
