After having a severe breakdown and mutilating his ear, the artist Vincent Van Gogh sought for help at the Saint-Rémy asylum, where he stayed for about a year. During this period, he had no desire to stop working and continued to paint any way he could. While recovering his health, he stayed inside making reproductions of works from his favorite artists. Van Gogh's brother sent him prints and photographs of these works for him to use as a reference. The artist would interpret the overall works with his color pallets and would especially paint Jean-François Millet's work.
Another subject Van Gogh portrayed while indoors was the still life paintings of flowers. He concluded many artworks of flowers as he saw it as a great opportunity to study color combinations. He often related these arrangements to the beauty he found in the Japanese woodcut prints. The artist states in a letter to his brother Theo about how one has the desire to create beautiful flower arrangements after observing the vibrant colors of the Oriental prints. The canvas has a thick black outline, also reminiscent of the Japanese prints. This influence is also evident as Van Gogh contours the figures in the painting and his use of vibrant colors.
Poppies and Butterflies is one of the still life paintings Van Gogh painted while being treated in the asylum. Different from most of his flower paintings that portray a centered vase and a typical composition, this work concentrates green leaves and stems on the right bottom side and doesn't clarify if the flowers are in a garden or a vase. The canvas used seems to be an untreated brown cotton fabric, like a potato sack, which gave the paint a rough texture.
Van Gogh painted two red poppies in full bloom, along with some older flowers with little petals left, and some buds that are still to open. The vibrant red tonalities create a beautiful complementary contrast with the many shades of green. There are two yellow butterflies in between the mingled branches of the flowers. The modern painter fills in some areas of the background with a pale, light blue — completed afterward. Van Gogh saw this subject as a symbol of rebirth — in life, just as in art itself.
