Vincent Van Gogh paints Road With Cypress And Star in 1890 and is the last painting he did in Saint-Remy, where he was a patient at an asylum. He was admitted by his own choice after having a crisis and mutilating his ear, as the artist struggled with psychological or mental issues – although to this day no one knows for sure what his pathology was. During his stay in Saint-Remy, Van Gogh developed a fascination for the cypress trees found in the landscape. He paints many other canvases with this same theme, like Cypresses and Cypresses with Two Women. In letters to his brother Theo, the Post-Impressionist painter describes these trees and how their shape and lines remind him of Egyptian obelisks.
Road With Cypress And Star differs from previous paintings with this theme which emphasize the contrast of light and dark, often portraying the cypress trees in dark shades of green and black, contrasting with the light and breezy blue sky. However, in this work Van Gogh is more preoccupied with the contrast of color. Many art critics believe this painting is a symbol of his presentment of his death, as he portrays two figures in the night sky representing the past and the future, the young and the old. But there is no knowing for sure if this interpretation is correct, as he never wrote or told anyone about the hidden meanings of this work.
With an unusual but dynamic composition, Vincent Van Gogh portrays the road in Saint-Rémy, France, on a luminous night. Two men taking a stroll are depicted in the bottom right corner and a couple in a horse carriage approaching them. The light colored road seems to reflect the colors of the rest of the painting and is painted diagonally on the canvas. The cypress tree is the main figure of this painting, almost centered, and considerably larger than all the other elements of the painting, exceeding the limits of the canvas. Van Gogh uses many shades of dark green for the tree and specks of light blue and green as a reflection of the surroundings. Behind it lays a field of wheat and a sky that seems to stand still. The Moon and the star are almost the same size and are separated by the grand cypress tree.
