Tree Roots is a beautiful oil painting by Vincent Van Gogh measuring 50.3 x 100.1 cm( 19.8 x 39.4 in), and it’s part of the Van Gogh Museum collection. The painting is an almost abstract picture and was done with very bright and mostly warm colors, in the characteristic palette of Van Gogh’s last phase. It shows a very flat point of view, showing both the treetops, the roots, and the ground. This painting was probably the last one that Vincent Van Gogh painted, which is why it’s speculated that it’s also unfinished.
Tree Roots is a rectangular-shaped canvas, emphasizing its horizontal dimension. The brushwork was executed with very thick paint. The trees were done with both deep and bright hues of blue, and the painter outlined them with black to focus on their structure. While some of the trees are straight, the canvas’s middle is full of a mixture of branches, roots, and trunks, giving them an almost abstract twist. The bushes were painted with light green, yellow, and some blueish-green details. The ground was rendered with brown, yellow, and green with thick paint.
In what could be his last works, Van Gogh seems to approximate his drawing style with his pictorial manner. While this is true for most of his oeuvre, the similarities get more evident here: the importance of the lines as composing elements as much as the dots, that in the case of painting become the small brushstrokes used as a color unit, as it can be seen on the ground, echoing his way of drawing.
Van Gogh faced many personal hardships in Arles. At first, he felt reinvigorated. The painter thought that the settings inspired him to paint akin to the Japanese ukiyo-e engravers and that the sun inspired him for a multicolored approach. But after his days with Paul Gauguin, which ended up badly, his health was in a compromised state, and he alternated in being at the St. Remy Hospital and his own home. At the end of 1889, he reported to Theo that he was working hard and doing his best to recover.
Van Gogh’s last phase shows a radicalization of his manner. The painter did adopt the flat aspect of the Japanese perspective, as seen in this work, and his visible brushstroke grew more apparent, with a final embracing of unnatural color. Curiously enough, some of the pictures from this period were also inspired by Biblical motifs, a novelty regarding the painter’s body of work.
