1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
Quay with Men Unloading Sand Barges is a beautiful 55,1 x 66,2 cm(21.6 x 26 in) oil on canvas by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. The work was acquired in 1912 by the Museum Folkwang in Essen, where it remains with some other artworks by the famous painter. The picture is based on a drawing the artist made in the same year, with the same title, which is at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York. There are few compositional changes, such as the two men at the boat on the right, the small boat behind them, and Van Gogh left out two fishing figures.
The composition’s point of view is from someone looking down at the scene. The ocean occupies a significant part of the composition and was painted with a turquoise light green that is very characteristic of Van Gogh’s late work. The artist employed his gestural brushstrokes, seen more evidently in the water. The shadows of the boats were done with the same color with an addition of black. There is a piece of land in the picture’s top-left, done in brown and with swift painterly marks, where some spots of non-primed canvas can be noticed.
The boats were rendered with almost pure white and yellow. Some of its details, the contours, for instance, were done with black-purple and light blue, also used for the worker’s clothing. The boats are side by side, and there is a tiny one behind them. The ship on the right has a French flag up, and two men are seen working. They appear to be fishing. Another one is carrying sand barges to the shore, while the third, farther away, seems to be fishing as well.
Quay with Men Unloading Sand Barges was painted in 1888 when the artist was living in Arles. The original drawing was made from real-life observation, as all Van Gogh works, and the location is the Rhone river, which was very close to his studio at the time. The canvas was given as a gift to Émile Bernard, one of the painter’s closest associations. It was first shown in public two years after Van Gogh’s death, in the first exhibition organized in his memory.

Free shipping is included in the price of the painting. Once the painting is ready and dry enough to ship, we will roll it and ship it in a sturdy cardboard tube.
We always ship express via courier to ensure your order reaches you as soon as possible - normally within three business days. The total delivery time from the moment you place your order until the package is delivered to your door is normally between three to four weeks.
If, in the unlikely event you were dissatisfied with the painting after reviewing it in person, it can be returned for a full refund for up to 365 days after delivery.
When you receive the painting; you are free to return it for more revisions or else for a full refund minus our actual shipping cost -- which is, on average, $35 per painting.
1st Art Gallery provides a full warranty covering manufacturing and material defects for paintings purchased from our website. The warranty covers damage for normal use. Damage caused by incidents such as accidents or inappropriate use are not covered.
Depending on the degree of damage to the warranted painting, it will either be repaired or replaced. This warranty service is provided free of charge.
