Vincent Van Gogh moves to Arles, where he seeks inspiration from the sunny landscapes of France, without the bustle of the big city. During this time, he traveled to Saintes Maries de la Mer where he painted many seascapes and landscapes of the town as well. The painting Seascape At Saintes Maries II is an example of one of these modern works that portray the Mediterranean Sea. Firstly, he drew the scene in pen and ink, capturing the great turbulence of the sea with the strokes of the pen. This sketch shows the influence the Japanese prints had on Van Gogh's work.
Like the other paintings in this series done in Saintes Maries, Van Gogh works en plein air — meaning he painted outside to capture the natural light of the scene — and we know this for a fact, as grains of sand were found under the layers of paint. He captured the movement of the sea with bold brush strokes and a palette knife, which allowed him to work freely with thick layers of paint, as well as scraping the paint off the canvas. He also paints Seascape at Sainte-Maries 2 during this trip.
Van Gogh found it very difficult to portray the colors of the Mediterranean Sea, stating it was always changing, as sometimes he saw green, purple, gray and pink. In fact, Van Gogh uses these colors when painting. The predominantly blue sea portrays specks of purple and ochre. The waves are green with white tops, almost like a snowy mountain. As the sea gets farther away from the viewer, it turns darker with shades of green. In the far background, there is an area of calm water with light blue, yellow and ochre, reflecting the sunny day. There is a sailboat in the darker area of water, and its white sail brings a light reflection on the water. Two other boats are featured in the far background.
The sky has tonalities of light blue with some white clouds and almost blends in the sea on the right side of the canvas. The composition was done in a way that the sea takes up most of the canvas and big green wave is featured in the forefront. The artist signs his first name, Vincent, in bright red as a contrasting and complementary color.
