In 1888, The Post-Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh painted the autumn landscape The Green Vineyard. He referred to the work entitled The Poet's Garden as a pendant to this The Green Vineyard, meaning they worked well together aesthetically. But after Van Gogh concludes The Red Vineyard, he prefers the pairing of the two — mentioning both pictures together practically every time he spoke of these works.
Van Gogh was deeply inspired by Realism and the topics the artists approached, especially the rural themes. The Green Vineyard portrays a typical rural scene, with peasants working in the vineyard near Montmajour, while some women walked through the field enjoying the pleasant weather. The artist uses lose brush strokes and thick layers of paint, making some parts a bit difficult to comprehend. As a Post-Impressionist artist, Van Gogh was not concerned with portraying a realistic landscape, but he drove his attention to interpreting the natural light of the landscape in his unique way.
The composition of this painting is simple and elegant. Van Gogh portrays a clear division of the horizon, with a few trees in blue and green in the far background, as well as a couple of houses. He uses the different tonalities of green mixed with yellow and brown to convey a perspective in the fields and adds specks of light blue. As the vineyards get closer to the viewer, the plants intertwine and seem to grow in a wild manner, painted with darker shades of green and black, contrasting with the yellow-green. The trunks of the plants are now visible in the foreground, as well as the grapes themselves. The yellow leaves and purple grapes complement each other beautifully. The bottom part of the painting is white as if it were unfinished.
The sky is calm and painted with wavy brushstrokes that seem to change from light blue — the same tonality that is reflected on the field — to a dark blue in a gradient manner. The figures of the working peasants almost blend in with the colors of the field, while the women that take a stroll are more recognizable. This could be because they are closer to the viewer or because they hold red parasols. Another interpretation is that Van Gogh intentionally camouflages the peasants, making a statement about the invisibility of the working class in the society of the time — a thought influenced by the Realist artists.
