In the year of 1888, the Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh paints The Harvest. After a period involved in the art scene of Paris, and socializing with other artists of the movement — as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and especially Paul Gauguin — Van Gogh moves to the countryside in Arles. Doing so, he aimed to create an art school or community to relive pure art. This region was exceptional for Post-impressionist painters, for the sunlight was intense and beneficial for landscape painting.
This particular landscape was portrayed many times and in many ways by the artist. He does initial sketches with pen and ink, also concluding other sketches of this scene after the painting is completed, to give as gifts. One of his simpler drawings is Harvest Landscape done in pen and ink, and Harvest in Provence, at the Left Montmajour is done with a bit of color and resembles the finished painting very much.
For this painting, Van Gogh uses a rich color palette to portray the hot and dry view, with a cloudless blue sky and the ground reflecting the yellow sunlight. He creates patches of land in the distance using different tonalities of green, ochre and yellow, as well as directing the brush strokes to convey the harvest. Closer to the viewer the artist depicts a plantation of hay, a fence and almost in the middle of the painting, a horizontal stripe of darker and taller plantations in shades of green. The composition was very well thought out as he uses the figures to orient the viewer's eyes.
In the far background, Montmajour was portrayed in the horizon with darker blues as well as hints of the sky blue. Some white houses look yellow as the sun shines on them. There are a couple of human figures working on the plantations, being that the farthest one draws more attention for a horse is pulling a carriage. The haystack on the left is also eye-catching as Vincent Van Gogh was able to use almost every color in his pallet to paint it. He used an intense red in many parts of the painting, like the hay and fence in the front and the roofs of the houses, and in addition to the predominantly yellow and ochre colors, makes this scene very warm.
