In 1888, Vincent Van Gogh moved to Arles, where he is greatly inspired by its landscapes. One particular theme the Post-Impressionist artist loved to portray was the Langlois Bridge. During this hopeful period, he paints the work entitled Langlois Bridge at Arles with Women Washing with a simple color palette that brings unity to the whole composition. Van Gogh also paints Langlois Bridge at Arles, among other studies in watercolor, ink and crayon.
During this period, the artist was hopeful of a recovery from his mental and psychological afflictions, but by the end of the year, he would suffer a massive breakdown, forcing him to admit himself into an asylum where he would stay for a year. Still, this series of landscapes show his enthusiasm and hope for a better life. His main inspiration during this time was the Japanese art, which is shown in Langlois Bridge at Arles with Women Washing because of its bright and pure colors and theme — the daily life of people working in a harmonious and natural scene.
In the forefront, Van Gogh paints tall grass as if it were close enough for the viewer to touch, in shades of green, brown and ochre. This vegetation continues alongside the river banks and reaches a group of women washing clothes in the water. He uses simples brush strokes to depict these female figures, as they are crouched down wearing long dresses and caps in orange, red, brown and yellow. On the left side of the canvas, adjacent to the vegetation, the painter includes a small area of dirt in red-brown and orange — beautifully contrasting with the green grass and blue tones of the river. The colors of the water reflect the many colors of the environment, mixing shades of blues, green and yellow in carefully painted ripples that come from the women's movements.
The painting made with this theme were sensibly studied to portray a more faithful representation of perspective — different than the artist's approach in other works like The Bedroom. The bricks in the bridge are carefully drawn out and painted mainly in shades of orange and yellow. Van Gogh also uses blues and greens to darken some areas, as well as dark contours. These are a carriage casually passing the drawbridge. The colors of the wood and the figure contrast with the smooth and clear blue sky.
