Portrait of Patience Escalier is a 69 x 56 cm( 27.1 x 22 in) oil on canvas by Vincent Van Gogh and is now part of a private collection. The work was done in 1888, in the period that the Dutch painter was living in Arles. While in Paris, he might have depicted many people that would pose for him for free, it wasn’t the case in Arles.
Van Gogh extensively explored local landscapes while in Arles. Maybe influenced by market pressure during this period, the artist was seemingly searching for unusual people reminiscent of some archetypes. That’s why this work is also known as “The Peasant” since the artist sought someone that fitted this “role.”
This motif wasn’t new in Van Gogh’s work. Inspired by Jean-Francois Millet, he had explored the subject of rural working people for years in his early works. The difference now is that Van Gogh’s darker, earthy palette gave way to a color explosion. His peers famously noted that the painter based his creations on recent discoveries on optics and always praised the use of complementary color.
The artist used a beautiful combination of blue and green, with a turquoise-like effect. Also using yellow, orange, and warm tones for his skin and background, Van Gogh presents the audience with a striking portrait. By this period, the painter already had embodied the apparent black outlines present in the older man’s clothes and face. Some details, such as the fabric used under his jacket, are red, giving greater contrast to the clothes’ green details. The man has his hands clenched together in an enigmatic gesture. Patience, the subject, is looking at the audience with a serious but kind look.
Thick paint was used in many parts, such as in the yellow hat and the intense orange background. Van Gogh modeled his subject’s features with the direction of the brushes, giving them volume and texture. Black is used in strategic areas to provide greater contrast, such as in his eyebrows or the figure’s outline. The Dutch artist was happy with this artwork, even mentioning it through his correspondence with his brother Theo.
