Vincent Van Gogh moved to Arles in 1888, at the end of a harsh winter. At the beginning of spring, the artist rushes to portray the trees that are in bloom and with fruit. During this year, he paints a series of landscapes with the joyful and radiant colors of the exciting season. The White Orchard is one of the paintings he concluded during this period and is meant to be a triptych with Pink Peach Tree in Blossom and The Pink Orchard.
The modern painter had an ornamental view of these paintings and thought they would bring attention to possible buyers. Like the other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, Van Gogh painted en plein air, meaning he painted outside to capture the optical effects the natural light had on the landscape. Since he only painted on location, he had to finish the painting quickly as the trees in bloom changed rapidly. In fact, he finished many of these plein air paintings in one sitting.
Van Gogh makes the composition of the painting guide the viewer's eyes from the two most significant trees to the tangled branches on top. The lines made by flowers on the grass guides the viewer to the horizon. The artist loved old trees that weren't maintained, as they have more detail and story to them. The intelligent use of color makes this painting look precious, as the trees seem to sparkle in the sun. The grass is mainly green, but have areas of red, yellow, blue and pink. The dark brown tree trunks painted in the forefront portray the same colors, and the tree trunks in the background are mostly simplified with shades of blue, green and red.
The bright colors used in the treetops are the highlight of the painting, as Van Gogh used yellow, white, and blue specks to paint the blooming flowers. Because of how busy the whole scene is with detail; the artist paints a simple and light sky — not drawing attention away from the central figures. The dark contours and the bright colors come as an inspiration from the Japanese wood prints Van Gogh admired and collected, just as many European modern painters did at the time. The painter was very proud of the results he achieved in The White Orchard and the other paintings of this series.
