At the end of 1888, Vincent Van Gogh decides to admit himself into an asylum, after suffering a meltdown. He knew he needed help, so he spent one year being treated in Saint-Rémy. During this period, the artist spent some months in his room but as soon as he regained his health, he was allowed to paint outside. Being a Post-Impressionist artist, he was very pleased with this because working with natural sunlight was necessary for his work. He painted many landscapes of the region of Saint-Rémy, like Cypresses and Wheat Field with Cypresses.
In the year of 1889, the year of Van Gogh's death, he paints Two Poplars on a Road Through the Hills portraying a different landscape than his more famous paintings of cypress trees. The works produced during this final period of his life were dynamic. He used expressive brush strokes with thick layers of paint, in which he oriented the movement and sense of the scene. With short and rapid strokes, the artist paints the sky that varies from a profound and dark blue, to an almost pure white. The hillsides are depicted with tonalities of green with hints of blue and orange. Some areas are very understandable to the viewer — the vegetation, a fence, and a house in the far background are clear — and other areas of the background are a bit more puzzling, with a sense of being unfinished. The bottom right part is very light, with shades of white, blue and yellow, and contrasts with the dark sky.
The way Vincent Van Gogh portrays the poplar trees is very different from the cypress. The artist liked to play with the darkness of the cypress trees and represented them usually during the daytime. The poplar trees are lighter, and he experimented contrasting them with a darker background. The play on colors in the two practically centered trees is breathtaking, as the painter knowingly contrasts the shades of green with specks of orange-brown. Different from parts of the background, both trees are very detailed, even though painted in a fast manner. Van Gogh used dark contours to make them stand out from the landscape and give them more volume. Both trees were painted in a way that they don't exceed the limits of the canvas, unlike most of the artist's cypress paintings.
