Undergrowth with Two Figures was painted by Vincent van Gogh during the last years of his life and shows a landscape with a couple. Typically, this would translate as a romantic theme in art, but van Gogh was able to portray this in an entirely different way. Opposed to earlier in his life when the artist believed in true companionship, Undergrowth with Two Figures shows no consolation in love; there seem to be no paths to take as the trees trap them.
The artist chooses to work on a long canvas, as he does in other landscape paintings like Wheat Field with Crows. This proportion enables him to build more panoramic views and compositions. In this particular painting, van Gogh strikes the horizon with solid vertical figures. These figures that represent trees, also resemble a sort of cage in which traps the couple. The viewer's eyes go directly to the off-centered couple and slowly makes its way to the horizon, guided by the vertical lines of the trees. The position of the trees also is what helps portray a sort of vanishing point, to create depth.
As a master of working with colors, Van Gogh sneaks in complementary pairings in this Undergrowth with Two Figures. The trees have a cold brown base color and tonalities of green, blue and a bit of yellow highlight them. He boldly contours them with lines that are almost black. The landscape shows tall grass with many shades of green, as well as bundles of yellow and orange flowers. He intentionally combines green and orange, as well as violet with yellow – as they harmoniously complement themselves. The background on the horizon is dark, resulting in a gloomy and hopeless scene.
The couple stand off-center, one close to the other, standing without reaction. Painted loosely, as is the whole work, the woman in a green dress seems to be looking down. This painting not only translates Vincent van Gogh’s view of love and relationships but also how he was towards the end of his life – many times feeling trapped and depressed.
