FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
In 1888, Vincent Van Gogh found a perfect location for his studio — the Yellow House. His idea for the Studio of the South was to receive other modern painters, mainly Paul Gauguin. He was greatly influenced by Gauguin's work and wanted to work under his guidance. In fact, he painted a series of sunflowers to welcome his new artist friend and possibly convince him to join the Studio of the South.
Van Gogh and Gauguin's relationship wasn't the smoothest. They differed in many ways, especially on their view of art. Van Gogh's Chair was painted during this period and forms a pair with Gauguin's Chair. Together these paintings create a prominent dualism. Eventually, the painters had an awful spat that led to Van Gogh's worst break-down, in which he mutilated his ear. After this occasion, the artist admits himself to an asylum in Saint-Rémy.
There isn't much information about the hidden meaning behind Van Gogh's Chair, but it is one of the most analyzed paintings he produced. The work features a simple wooden chair with a woven straw seat. The perspective is a little awkward, like the portrayal The Bedroom that was also painted in the Yellow House. He slightly exaggerates the position of the legs to give more sense of depth.
The chair is mainly yellow, green and ochre, with hints of complementary blue contours. The same blue is used to paint the wall in the background, and he uses a darker shade of the same color for the door on the right side. The tile floor is carefully drawn out and is painted with thick layers of orange, green, and red-brown, creating a beautiful complementary contrast. There is a wooden box in the background on the left side of the canvas, where Van Gogh signs his name. He often used his signature as an aesthetic element in his paintings.
The Post-Impressionist puts his pipe and tobacco on the chair, to characterize it as his own. The scene is light and possibly done in the day-time — a contrast to Gauguin's Chair that is darker, portraying a night scene. The two paintings of chairs also differ as they translate each artist's personality. Gauguin's Chair is more sophisticated and embellished, depicted with books and a lit candle on top. The dualism of these paintings makes it understandable why Van Gogh and Gauguin were unable to work together.
