After having a severe breakdown and mutilating his ear, the artist Vincent Van Gogh sought for help at the Saint-Rémy asylum, where he stayed for about a year. During this period, he had no desire to stop working and continued to paint any way he could. While recovering his health, he stayed inside making reproductions of works from his favorite artists. Van Gogh's brother sent him prints and photographs of these works for him to use as a reference. The artist would interpret the overall artworks with his color pallets and would especially paint Jean-François Millet's work.
After recovering most of his health, the Post-Impressionist was allowed to roam the nature around the asylum to paint landscapes. During one of his outings, Van Gogh painted Wild Roses. Just like with the painting Poppies and Butterflies, it seems the artist improvised the canvas and painted on an untreated and darker cotton fabric. The texture of the fabric weave is evident, and it creates rougher brush strokes.
Flowers were one of Van Gogh's most beloved subjects to paint, as he saw them as a symbol of rebirth. They were also a good subject to experiment with vibrant color pallets. In this particular painting, the modern painter depicts a bush of wild roses with about a half a dozen white roses. When portraying nature, the artist was never worried in perfection, so it is natural that these roses are past their full bloom, as the petal in their yellow core has already fallen. The flowers are harmoniously resolved in simple brush strokes and with no contours.
The leaves take up more than half of the painting and are portrayed with a dark green base. Van Gogh highlights the leaves in the forefront by using lighter tones and dark graphic contours. This painting has an apparent influence of the Japanese woodcut prints, which also worked with dark outlines, vibrant colors, and pictures of nature. Van Gogh had a vast collection of these prints and enjoyed looking at them, especially from the artist Katsushika Hokusai. The artist also organized an exhibition of his collection while living in Paris. The background is a light green with horizontal lines with of almost white green.
