In 1888, Vincent Van Gogh moved to Arles, France, where he completed hundreds of oil paintings and drawings — many of which are landscapes. Willows At Sunset is one of the paintings done during this period, marking the beginning of autumn. There are still debates to whether this work was executed as a study for another work, like The Sower 2, or a finished painting — due to the rapid way Van Gogh paints this work, giving it an unfinished look.
The old willow trees portrayed in this painting were perfect in the painter's eyes. He preferred trees that were not nicely trimmed, growing freely as they were intended to. In this case, the willows brought an eerie sense to the landscape because of its thin and untamed branches. The composition guides the viewer's eyes from the main trees in the forefront to the horizon in the background, and lastly, the sun. The willow branches spread out in front of the sky with brushstrokes that go against the direction of the sunrays, causing the impression of a cage. Van Gogh related the wheat fields with his religious connection and a sign of rebirth — as the reoccurring image of a grand sun in his paintings can also mean rebirth.
The overall scene is very warm for, in the field, tonalities of red, orange and yellow take up more than half of the canvas. He inserts small areas of green and brown as well. The sky also features warm colors, as the yellow sun radiates orange, red and yellow. This pattern was broken with complementary colors on the trees and the far background. The willows are mostly painted in a blend of green, blue and black. Van Gogh was an expert on complementary color pallets, learning from the Pointillists about the scientific studies of color. The far background portrays a horizontal strip of vibrant turquoise that makes the overwhelming amount of orange pigments in the painting pop to the viewer's eyes in a harmonious way.
The trees in the forefront and some other elements of the painting are represented with dark contours, an influence Van Gogh took from the Japanese artists and their woodcut prints. The unusual compositions and the vibrant colors also are a reflex from this oriental artistic culture. The Post-Impressionist painted with thick layers of paint through the end of his life, sometimes even painting with a spatula.
