Wassily Kandinsky's 1909 painting Arabs I (Cemetery) is a mournful symphony in paint, an abstract funeral dirge rendered in bold, dancing tones. The Russian painter, theorist and father of abstract art, took up painting at the age of thirty, and proceeded to revolutionize modern art right up until his death in 1944. In his formative years as a painter Kandinsky travelled through Russia, Italy, Holland, Tunisia, and Switzerland and spent a year near Paris. Initially inspired by Russian folk art, of a similar type that would influence the great Marc Chagall, Kandinsky became interested in the proto-Avant-garde movement of Fauvism. The Fauvists, an informal group of Modern artists, used strong, rich colors over the representational depictions of the Impressionists. Spawning Henri Matisse and André Derain, the movement did not last up until the First World War. Yet, retaining much of the tonal range of the movement, Arabs I (Cemetery) is characteristic of Kandinsky's early use of emotional resonances and vocal timbers expressed through color.
The colors in Arabs I (Cemetery) are vibrantly alive, contrasting the setting and purveyed mood of the scene. In this abstract reproduction of a group of mourners the fragmented forms of the folk costumes, gravestones, and segmented space seems to loosely and informally describe the formal arrangement, as if the visual perception of the scene is not the primary object of importance. The patchwork mosaic of the image portrays a radiant countryside at odds with the sorrowful place of the dead. Time and place is unimportant in Kandinsky's image, giving the viewer only the ethnicity and location of the figures through the title. Without nostalgia or yearning the artist conjures an objective reproduction of death as seen by life, making the viewer glad to be the right side of the grave.
