Kandinsky is a painter with an interesting artistic path. Historically, the artist started late in his life, when he was 30. Up to this point, he studied law and economics. Yet he has been one of the most notable names of the abstract art and probably one of the most important artists for the Modernist movement. Kandinsky started painting with strong influences of Expressionism during a time where his artwork still had figurative elements. Slowly, the scapes became more abstract, and the brushstrokes became more intriguing, to the point where art historians point out Kandinsky as the first artist to have developed an artwork that is properly and completely abstract.
During his life, Kandinsky moved to Germany where he spent his years developing as an artist but was forced to come back to Russia due to the war. When finally he came back to Germany, in 1922, he focused completely on the theory of forms and points. He wrote books about it and also taught classes at Bauhaus. The piece Around the Circle was produced in 1940, in one of the last artistic phases of his career. At this point, he had experimented a lot and produced series that significantly differ from each other.
Around the Circle is set on a dark green background. The variety of shapes and colors build several different spaces in this canvas. There is a colorful shape filled with colored forms on the left. Some of them are textured, others are solid. On the right side, there is a ribbon-like shape folding into itself, also filled with different forms. The shape that draws great attention, in the middle of the composition, is a red circle - which relates to the name of the piece - with a smaller black circle inside and a yellow dot. The artist himself would often attribute great importance to the color red. Apart from those, there are the wireframes of small colorful shapes, as if they were being sprinkled over the rest of the forms. These are ovals and semi-circles.
On the right side, there is an organic shape filled with little patterns including two black plaid squares that are distorted following the outline of this form. The shapes are mostly portrayed in pastel colors, apart from the circle in the middle and a large purple part that is placed over the circle. Because the background is dark green, the light colored shapes contrast and stand out from the rest of the painting.
