Autumn in Bavaria

Wassily Kandinsky's 1908 painting Autumn in Bavaria is an abstract reproduction of a landscape scene painted near the artist's home in Munich. The Russian painter, theorist and father of abstract art took up painting at the age of thirty, and proceeded to revolutionize modern art right up to his death in 1944. Autumn in Bavaria dates from the artist's early period, little over a decade after he took up painting. Deciding to become an artist in 1896, Kandinsky moved to Munich to study under Anton Ažbe, like his contemporary Marc Chagall, his work was initially influenced by the folklore tales of his native Russia.

Munich at the turn of the twentieth century was one of the heartlands of the Jugendstil movement, also known as Art Nouveau. Until 1908 the artist worked in this vein, influenced by lithographic techniques. The arrival of Autumn in Bavaria heralded the arrival of a style that would pioneer the embryonic form of abstract art. Beginning to paint out of doors, 'en plein air', Kandinsky began experimenting with his craft by forging experiential reproductions of scenes with the palette-knife on canvas board.

The years preceding his Autumn in Bavaria were spent traveling extensively through the Netherlands, Tunisia, Italy, France, and Germany. The vast variation of lights, colors and landscapes inspired the artist to work from nature, and upon becoming acquainted with the Fauvist artists Gauguin and Matisse, Kandinsky revised his palette to include bright, stark, and vibrant tones. The Bavarian landscape dominated his work around 1908, developing into a distinctive style that retained the verisimilitude of its subject in spite of the fragmented, abstract mode in which they were represented. In Autumn in Bavaria the artist reduces the elements on the canvas to demarcated segments of color, compressing space into separate zones, and pushing the limits of representation of recognition.

Purchasing a Gallery Wrap
