Contrasting Sounds is an artwork created during the time Kandinsky was in Germany deepening his studies in art theory related to forms and points. He had just published his second theoretical book on the subject and was teaching design classes at Bauhaus. It’s interesting to observe how these studies and the environment he was inserted affect his production and perceive how the paintings get more complex and more elaborated at this time. As he moves away from figurative forms, Kandinsky creates a different universe, creating a world of shapes and forms that have contrasting and distinctive relationships among themselves.
Music has always been an essential element on the artist’s life, and he did a few works on the subject matter, Impression III Concert is one of the most relevant ones. Coming across this piece, at first sight, it is an entirely abstract piece with complex forms and an interesting relationship among them. But when we learn its title, it’s almost impossible not to relate the painting with music.
Contrasting Sounds has a plain beige background. On both the top and bottom left corners there are dark elements. The top edge is divided by a dark diagonal shape colored on a darker tone similar to the background. A circle with a thick black contour is placed on top of it. This circle is crossed by this diagonal shape dividing it into two colors. On the bottom, there is an irregular shape with several layers of black, blue and white. It has triangular points and resembles of figurative waves or water.
The middle is populated by several shapes, where some are organic, and others are geometric. A series of squares and rectangles come from the left-hand side and distribute themselves on a horizontal line. Behind them, there are a few organic shapes colored in solid green, blue and yellow and a black triangle. Just under this line of shapes, there is a black organic line, a series of black and white squares, and a black circle contoured in yellow. Now, one of the most exciting elements of this piece is a violet translucid stripe that crosses the canvas horizontally, changing the color of all the elements that are placed under it. The whole artwork has elements that go up diagonally from the left to the right side of the canvas.
