FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
Flood Improvisation is a striking piece of art. It was painted in 1913, and at the time the artist had been experimenting with color and flowy brushstrokes, creating several pieces that are set around the theme of water and waves. This moment in his career is very well represented in this piece. Movement is probably the most distinctive quality of this piece. Wherever you place your eye, the shapes and colors are going to lead you into another portion of the painting. The entire canvas has a live, vivid atmosphere, and even the darker and more geometric strokes are leading us somewhere.
Kandinsky’s pieces touch our emotions and dialogue with our perception, and this composition, when put together with the name of the painting, evokes the idea that we are in the middle of the chaos and confusion of a flood that has just happened. It is mostly composed of large and colorful organic shapes. There are no straight lines, and the edges of the shapes are not defined by borders but are separated by the spaces of darkness and negative spaces between the pieces.
Black and dark blue are spread all over the canvas, to the point that we have a feeling that they are the real base colors for the rest of the piece - as if the bright spots of color were added later to a dark canvas. This helps with the idea that we are standing in the middle of a turmoil of water. On top of these colors, there are smaller shapes built in red and blue. These shapes pursue the edges of the bigger splashes of color and respect the limit between the colorful beads and the dark background. They are subtle details that make the oil look even more chaotic and alive.
Around these shapes, there are some long strings of paint that connect the forms, as if they were threads of a musical instrument, or as if these bodies were not completely solid and were melting and liquefying among each other. On the bottom, there are some different colors like brown and green. It is interesting that these colors only appear on the bottom corner of the space, and they are not put together in defined shapes. It’s almost like they leaked to the rest of the painting.
