As the title suggests, On White II is a piece composed of a variety of white elements that share space with colorful geometric and organic shapes on a white background. At this point in history, the artist would have a strong relationship with the abstraction in his pieces and left several testimonials about his methods and his development process. He had already produced the famed The Blue Rider, and Couple Riding and his work got more and more abstract. To Kandinsky, white represented peace, life, and silence. Most of his graphic work was produced before 1913, and at this point, he would be exploring the free expression through geometric shapes and colors and the combination between them.
The artist would often paint while listening to music, and this painting is a graphic representation of how he interpreted music visually. On White II, as many of his abstract work, is set on a large square canvas. The shapes interact with each other, eventually overlapping or crossing over one another. There is a large square painted on moss green that seems to be the basis for the rest of the shapes. Some pointy black lines are drawn across the large square, crossing each other. The black elements are the ones that attract the most attention due to the white background. One of the lines is interrupted by a thick lined circle that resembles a clock with its pointers.
Around this setting, there are organic and geometric colored shapes. They are predominantly yellow, blue and red. Some organic thin lines are connecting or crossing some of the forms.
Some shapes are separated from the main group like the three straight lines on the bottom, or the two pointy red and black lines that cross each other on the top. All the elements are rather provocative due to the high contrast and lack of sense of the abstraction.
Another element present not only on this piece but in several of Kandinsky’s works is the set of squares. There are two black and white sets and a colored one. On the large geometrical shape on the bottom, there are smaller yellow triangles, black and white concentric circles and some "U" shaped organic forms represented in white and orange. At some points, the painting looks completely geometric and architectural. But some areas leave it to an interpretation of life forms.
