Picture of the Great Gate of Kiev is an oil painting that was created around the year of 1928. At this point, Kandinsky had already come back to Germany and was teaching basic design classes at Bauhaus. Two years earlier, in 1926, he published his second theoretical book on forms and lines. This part of his personal life affected his production and became theme of many pieces, where he went full abstract and started deepening his studies in color and shape.
The style present in Picture XVI The Great Gate Of Kiev is a new approach to some techniques that the artist had been improving on the past recent years. For instance, the nearly perfectly squared canvas is divided into three pieces. There is a curved form on the bottom, forming sort of a hill where the other shapes are placed. Several of his paintings present this element that resembles a hill in the middle of the scape, serving as a base for a little city skyline on top of it, like Moscow I and Small Pleasures.
Then the canvas is divided vertically. The right part is a little more substantial, and the background was painted on a stained ochre color. The left is blue. The part that is in the bottom, under the circle, is dark grey, but there is an outer line dividing the circle in blue. On top of the hill shape, there are several geometrical forms, and they form the skyline of a city. The style of this painting is more geometrical and more defined than his previous abstract work like The Blue Mountain. The skyline of the city is formed by a series of triangles in different sizes. The shapes overlap, but there is no transparency on the cross sections.
The division between the colors is separating night from day. On the left, there is a yellow circle with white outlines that represents a sun, while on the right side, over the brown background, there is a white moon and some light colored clouds. On the left side as well, there is an eye-shaped form placed vertically and divided entirely into smaller geometric parts. It is resting atop a couple of trapezium shapes. Behind this eye shape, some white horizontal lines cross the picture all the way from the left corner to the circle where the city skyline is placed.
