The Russian artist was one of the most influential painters of the Abstract Art movement. He only started painting when he was 30, and before that he used to study Law and Economics, making his artistic career even more interesting and peculiar. It was when he moved to Germany that he started to develop new ideas and a unique style, expanding his abstract technique and turning it more and more complex. Upward is a famous piece from the peak of Kandinsky's production. It was painted in 1929, when Kandinsky came back to Germany for the second time, invited by Bauhaus’ founder to become part of the academic body. Soon after, he started teaching there.
At this moment, the artwork produced by Kandinsky were completely abstract and often would make a wordplay between the image and the title of the design. Upward is one of the most important examples of this time. It is a very vertical piece. Different geometrical shapes are balanced on top of a base. This base is formed by two different forms, and together they build a triangular shape that points upwards and balances the other shapes. One of them looks like a house cut in the middle, and the other one resembles the letter E, portrayed in a clear geometric cut.
On top of this base, two large semi-circles are overlapped. The one on the left is plain orange, except for the parts that are being overlapped by the other circle. The communication between these shapes and the orange semi-circle with the background evoke an idea that the shape is translucent. The semi-circle on the right is more complex than the other. It is divided right in the middle horizontally by a black line. The top part is light blue, and the bottom is pink. As these two colors interact with the orange semi-circle, they turn respectively light yellow and orange.
From the bottom of the large bicolor circle part, two rectangles come out, and these too interact with the colors of the background and the other shapes. Floating on the top right, there is a solid black shape with a format that resembles the letter E. The same pattern is observed on the shape that forms the triangular base of the ensemble. On the bottom left, there is a small grey square. The whole background is green, but different shades are observed all across the painting. The tones are cooler and darker on the bottom right and warmer around two semi-circles.
