FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
Between the years of 1914 and 1921, Wassily Kandinsky was back in Russia, where he produced some of the most iconic of his abstract artworks. White Stroke is one of these pieces and certainly a beacon for the Abstract Art movement in general. Soon after this period, having in mind the astonishing pieces produced back then, he was invited to come back to Germany. This painting doesn’t have objective or representational elements, but the shapes are well defined, and the colors are intense. That, along with the vague title lead the observer to search for his own references on the interpretation of the piece.
The whole painting is very dark. The background is represented mostly in three colors: Brown, dark blue and black. These colors are not saturated and are placed on the background in blocks, so it’s possible to see the strokes as if they were created on top of an already set pattern. The corners are isolated from the rest of the painting by dark diagonal lines.
The rest of the shapes are condensed in the middle, where the painting is very busy. The shapes overlap each other, but unlike in other of Kandinsky’s pieces, the colors are heavy and solid and not see through.
The artists mixed organic and geometric shapes. Some of them are lined by the contrast between the background colors. Others seem to float in space. There are two straight black lines crossing the background on the bottom, placed over three vertical red lines. The red lines are almost parallel, but not exactly. Over this space, there is some sort of blue dome that serves as a base for the mix of forms and colors that are placed above.
These colors merge with each other. There are half circles, half moon shapes, triangles and squares. All of these shapes are out of order and not symmetrical. They are placed in a complex way and relate to each other in a very intricate movement. They are represented in faded shades of blue, green and brown, and to contrast with these desaturated colors, there are spots of vibrant yellow and red.
Now, clearly, the element that names the painting and the most striking characteristic of this artwork is a white, vigorous stroke that crosses the canvas right in the middle. The White Stroke has a boomerang shape, and even though is an organic form, it is portrayed in such a tied and perfectly aligned outline that it looks almost geometrical.
