William-Adolphe Bouguereau concluded the oil portrait entitled Fardeau Agreable, or Not too Much to Carry in English, during the year 1895. The artist took many trips to Western France, where he had contact with the peasant lifestyle of the rural environment. As an Academic painter, Bouguereau valued traditional themes influenced by the art and culture of the ancient Greeks – especially mythological and biblical subjects, as well as idyllic scenes, which were often ignored by other classical painters. Idyllic paintings were inspired by the style of short poems written by Theocritus and their pastoral themes.
The French painter was most known for his work portraying the female figure. Bouguereau was a master at anatomical precision in his drawings and paintings. He took advantage of how nudes were well seen by the academy and by the critics when depicted through nymphs and Goddesses, so he could show his knowledge of anatomy, proportion, and representing soft skin texture. In many of his religious paintings, Bouguereau would also depict beautiful women in sacred and more reserved atmospheres, like Mother Mary. By 1877, the artist would have experienced many tragic loses in his life, for during the course of ten years, his first wife, along with three of their five children, would pass away from health complications. Some could interpret the artist’s warm portrayals of children in his portraits to be a reflection of these tragedies in his life.
In the painting Fardeau Agreable, Bouguereau depicted two young girls on a long, vertical canvas. The youngest girl is riding on piggyback on the other young woman – who seems to be about twice her age – while wearing a simple white dress, a symbol of purity. She has dark eyes; blond pulled back hair and bare feet that dangle in the air. The older girl is bent forward to balance out the weight. She has dark blond hair and also wears a simple peasant dress, but light brown and with a dark blue skirt. Both models look directly at the viewer with a lovable grin. The background shows some red and blue wildflowers as well as some dark green weeds. An ochre-colored field stretches out into the distance, where violet and blue mountains can be seen on the horizon from behind the fog. Bouguereau used soft shades of blue, white, pink and purple in the sky, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
