The French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau concluded the portrait entitled Girl Holding Lemons in 1899. It was during this period that the artist’s son, Paul, contracted tuberculosis and died by the turn of the century, becoming Bouguereau’s fourth child to have passed away during his lifetime. Although his personal life was filled with tragic losses, his career was, for the most part, very successful. Academically trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the artist turned to the past masters of the Renaissance to base his studies upon, serving as reference to achieving a photorealistic representation.
In Girl Holding Lemons, Bouguereau painted an outdoor portrait of a dark-haired young woman, wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and a simple shawl over her shoulders. The model holds about seven lime-yellow ripe lemons in her hands – some with branches and leaves. Her expression is very peaceful, and she stares directly into the viewer’s eyes with her head slightly slanted. Some vegetation can be seen in the background in dark green pigments. The environment shows sun-bathed mountain tops painted in tonalities of violet, pink, and yellow that lay over a barely visible body of water. A small portion of the bright yellow sky is seen on the top of the vertical canvas.
The artist was most famous for his paintings of voluptuous nudes – characters often derived from the ancient Greek culture, like nymphs and Goddesses, as well as his biblical scenes. He was always featured in the Paris Salon, and thousands of people would travel from around the globe to see his work in person. Bouguereau studied anatomy intensely, even attending cadaver desiccations to understand the structure of the human body better. Although his paintings were adored by many, the avant-guard artists of the Impressionism did not see value in working by the rules of the Academy and were ultimately against Bouguereau’s method and style.
By the end of Bouguereau’s career, the overall taste in art was headed towards modern painting, and his work began to be referred to as outdated. He became virtually forgotten for many years after his death, but the value of his work soon became evident again in the public’s and critic’s eyes. Today Bouguereau is considered one of the greatest Classic masters of the XIX century, bringing fantastical scenes to life in his oil paintings.
