William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted the portrait entitled Italian Girl Drawing Water, or in the original French Jeune Italienne puisant de l'eau, in 1871. Amazingly, the artist produced over eight hundred paintings throughout his lifetime, in which many depict beautiful female figures. With a Classic Academic background, the artist mostly portrayed images of madonnas, nymphs, goddesses, and shepherdesses. Bouguereau mastered the art of depicting women – nude or not – that captivate the viewer with their mystical grace.
The painting Italian Girl Drawing Water is an example of the artist’s portrayal of a strong and beautiful woman. With Mediterranean heritage, the woman features darker skin and black hair. The most captivating aspect of this artwork is the way Bouguereau depicted her stern expression, giving the woman a level of confidence. Her dark eyes look directly at the viewer, and her lips show her as a solemn person. The model is wearing a beautiful dress, typical of the culture – the top is a ruffled white shirt with red details, and she wears a dark green skirt with a beautifully decorated fabric wrapped around her waist. She also wears a folded white cloth over her head that flows down her shoulders and back, possibly to facilitate the work of carrying the large bronze pitcher filled with water, in which she is leaning over.
Bouguereau’s flawless techniques give his artwork an almost hyperrealistic feel. The textures of the different materials – like stone, metals, or even the pearl necklace around the woman’s neck – gives the spectator the impression he can touch the painting and physically feel the various surfaces. The French painter was also experienced in human anatomy and was praised for his portrayals of feet and hands. In Italian Girl Drawing Water, the model intertwines her fingers, creating a more casual position as she rests her elbow on the pitcher. In the background, a bridge casts a dark shadow over the natural surroundings. The ground is mostly painted with shades of brown and ochre, while the bright green bushes emerge from the shadows. The sun shines strongly in the distance, and another woman can be seen walking in the opposite direction, passing through large rocks and possibly starting her long journey home.
