William-Adolphe Bouguereau concluded the painting entitled L'Amour au Papillon, also known as Cupid with a Butterfly in English, in 1888. The artist was well known for his biblical and mythological paintings, mostly portraying the female figure. As an academic painter, Bouguereau worked under the influence of the past masters of the Renaissance, and consequently, the ancient Greeks as well. He learned the traditional standards of composition and oil painting technique but was able to take what he absorbed to a new level – working with photorealistic paintings.
In L'Amour au Papillon, Bouguereau portrayed a young Cupid – a known character in the Greek mythology – gently picking up a butterfly that landed on his arm. The French artist described Cupid in other of his famous works, some with his love, Psyche, like L’Amour et Psyche, enfants (Cupid and Psyche as Children), Psyche et L’mour [Psyche and Cupid], L’Amour Mouille (Wet Cupid), Cupid with Thorn, among many others. In this version, Cupid is a young child sitting on a concrete fountain. Some foliage and weeds are growing up the walls of the construction, and the style of the fountain seems to be from the ancient Greek culture. It also appears to be ancient because of the dark stain underneath the where it spews water. To the right, on the opposite side of the fountain, the Cupid’s beautifully decorated bow and arrow lay on the background – painted in royal blue, gold, and a red lace.
Cupid’s skin is soft as silk, and his blond hair has messy curls – both which Bouguereau portrays the textures beautifully. The artist was a master of anatomy, being able to place his model’s in the most unexpected, yet natural, postures. He sits with one leg up on the fountain edge, curving his arm and torso so he can see and reach the yellow butterfly. His hands are beautifully portrayed and grab the viewer’s attention – while twisting one arm, young Cupid rests his hand on his thigh, palm up. The other hand carefully holds the butterfly, leaving the pinky and ring finger up. The details are exceptionally well done in L'Amour au Papillon – from the dark vegetation in the background, to the small dimples on the model’s elbow. Bouguereau froze this image as if someone took a picture without Cupid noticing.
