FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
William-Adolphe Bouguereau's 1884 canvas La leçon difficile, is an almost photo-realistic reproduction of a child engaged in a difficult lesson, her cherubic fingers following the lines of text as she stares towards the viewer. A fine example of the populist realism that earned Bouguereau his fame and respect, La leçon difficile is the painterly equivalent of the philanthropic prose of Victor Hugo. Bouguereau, the favourite artist in the French Salons of the second half of the nineteenth century, favoured depicting women or young girls as allegorical vehicles for discussion and contemplation. As opposed to the ubiquity of the male figures of Neoclassicalism, Bouguereau had a great personal interest in the education of women and girls. Although a member of the often-derided Academy tradition, Bourguereau used his standing in the art world at the time to allow women to study at many leading French art institutions including the Academie Francaise.
Showing early promise as an artist, Bouguereau's father was convinced to send him to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, designing labels for jam jars to supplement his meagre living allowance. Once again through the intervention of his uncle, the artist was given his first commission to paint portraits of his church regulars, and when his Aunt agreed to supplement his income Bouguereau travelled to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, taking extracurricular classes in anatomy and archeology. With direct experience of the trials and benefits of receiving an appropriate education, the artist's delicate and compassionate reproduction of the basic social need to educate children is a far cry from the almost complete social isolation of the Impressionist's themes. Bouguereau's concern with modernity and the conditions of urban living as depicted in La leçon difficile is testament to his deep respect for the educational system that so benefited him.
