William-Adolphe Bouguereau concluded the painting entitled Rest, or Le Repos in the original French, during the year 1879. The artist painted many artworks with a rural theme, referred to as idyll – a term originated from the poet Theocritus of ancient Greek who created a style of short poems describing the simple pastoral life. Throughout the decade, many artists of diverse areas used this subject in their work, especially the painters of the Realist movement.
This masterpiece portrays a family resting in nature after much work. In the forefront, a small boy sleeps on the grass in an extremely relaxed and natural posture. He raises one arm underneath his head, laying on a handmade leather bag, while his face falls to the other side, burying his cheek on his mother’s leg. He has luscious brown hair that shines under the sunlight, and the texture of his skin is like a baby. The child wears light brown knee-length shorts, as well as a decorated fabric around his waist with violet, red, and green pigments. The way Bouguereau depicted the folds and texture of the materials is exquisite and detailed, especially the boy’s white cotton shirt, with a navy blue open vest.
To the left of the composition, the mother sits on the field of grass with a baby in her lap. The infant has angelic features – which came naturally to Bouguereau as he often painted religious scenes – with curly blond hair, a simple white fabric wrapped around his body, and a fruit in his hand, possibly a representation of innocence. His mother wraps her arms around him with a gentle touch. Both figures stare deeply into the viewer’s eyes, and she features light honey-colored eyes, the young child’s is dark as the night – and the opposite with their hair color. The model features a beautiful and decorated dress with a fine white puffy shirt, dark blue velvet details with floral decorations, as well as a long red skirt.
In the painting Rest, Bouguereau depicts the massive dome of St. Peter’s church in the far horizon, a reference to the morals and virtues of the Italian families of the countryside. The painter carefully planned out the composition scheme of the three central figures, creating a triangular shape when looking at them together, recalling the work entitled The Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John by Raphael.
