FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
The French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau concluded the artwork entitled Rest at Harvest in 1865. Most known for his photo-realistic portrayals of fantastical scenes of Greek mythology or even from the Bible, the artist was able to transport the viewer inside of his paintings. The considerable attention to detail along with his technique of realistic precision gives life to a flat surface, with bursts of color and textures that the spectator can virtually feel. The same way Bouguereau can bring a tangible atmosphere to paintings with images of nymphs, Goddesses, and flying angles, the French artist was able to achieve this with more common atmospheres.
By working with idyllic themes, Bouguereau brought forth a realm of society which was often forgotten by Academic painters of the time. The term idyll comes from the ancient Greek poet Theocritus and his style of writing involving pastoral subjects. Some of Bouguereau’s most famous idyllic paintings are L’innocence (Innocence), The Shepherdess, and Les Noisettes (Hazelnuts) (or The Nut Gathers) – all representing young women. Throughout his entire career, the French artist focused on the representation of the female figure, becoming quite popular amongst the public, as well as the critics. Bouguereau was trained at one of the most prestigious art academies of Europe, École des Beaux-Arts, and was featured at the exhibits of the Paris Salon.
The oil portrait Rest at Harvest depicts a peaceful scene in which a young woman lays on the grass next to a field of golden wheat. Her posture is extremely relaxed, with one leg resting on the other, her left arm laying over her stomach and her other arm bent with her hand on her chest. The model’s brunet hair falls over to the wheat as her head falls to the ground. The grass beneath her varies in green, brown, and ochre pigments – with the last two colors repeated in the tall wheat plantation, but much more vibrant. The bright red flowers in her hand and hair, as well as some specks scattered in the field, bring a beautiful contrast to the scene. The angle created by the edge of the field guide the viewer’s eyes into the distance. A large house can be partially seen in the background, as well as some tall, dark green trees and bushes. The sky shows the sun setting in a bright white, light blue, and violet, while some darker clouds come in.
